The city of Hernlak is speculated to be the birthplace of modern faunids. Herne was said to have stepped forth from the massive conjoined trees in the middle of the lake, blessing faunids into their present talents. Civilization expanded at an extraordinary rate in the subsequent population boom; Metal manipulation, fur handling, farming, and other societal necessities were born and perfected here. While not known for specific trades, Hernlak is deeply respected for its spiritual connections and respected X schooling. Additionally, a mentoring system for battle-hardened guards and protectors is reinforced due to the onslaught of neighboring corrupted faunids.
The current climate of Hernlak is that of compassion and bonded community. With the ever-growing presence of corrupted Faunids lurking along the borders of the city, defending guards are constantly on vigil around the outskirts. This constant high-alert for danger has caused ripples of anxiety that waver the high spirits that once flowed. Only a handful of tragedies have been confirmed within the last few years, however, the rate at which Fawnids and low-spirited fauns have disappeared seemingly overnight is reasonable cause for concern. As more cases of absentees creep up through the vine, wavering faith in Herne's protection lingers in those who are at most risk to be the next victim.
By far the most iconic and and emblematic feature within Hernlak is it's connection to Lifesource X. Empowered and saturated with magical essence, the towering tree permeates Herne's own Lifesource. Hundreds of passionate students travel to Hernlak to join the prestigious Lifesource X academy. With only a few of these academies located throughout Atalav, the presence of the academy has nearly doubled the population in their respective cities.
Bustling with those old and new, there is never a dull moment in this city. Whether it is the crowded market squares or the peaceful nighttime lightshows, someone or something is active throughout the city. A driving force behind the lively atmosphere is the wide array variety of shops that line the streets. Everything from baking, blacksmithing, taverns, and general goods are available throughout the day and night. Despite the diversity of shops there is rarely anything that isn't also able to be purchased elsewhere.
Most buildings residing in Hernlak are basic shacks constructed from old timber and recycled material. Low roofs and basic amenities are commonplace with only the occasional building being built otherwise on land. Within the boundaries of the lake are a few well-regarded buildings built on stilts to seemingly "float" over the lake's surface. These structures are reserved for those who regularly are in touch or in need of Herne's blessing and Lifesource. Mentors, students, Tellers, and other high-esteemed life paths typically reside in these luxury homes.
It is rumored that Hernlak is where Herne originally came to confront the primitive Faunids and gifted the community their blessings. Where Herne touched Atalav, a sapling sprouted. This sapling grew rapidly till is supposedly touched the sky. The branches said to yearn for the god's touch once more. Some say that the tree has stopped it growth and its undeniable proof that the landmark has reached it goal. Others claim that the size of the tree makes it impossible to notice the subtle growth.
Agriculture is extremely fertile and seems to be more flavorful than any other location can attempt to produce. Whether it's proper altitude or a god's touch, no one is quite sure. The bountiful crops are extremely fruitful and seemingly endlessly producing incredible bounties. Flowers and medicinal herbs used in traditional medicine are especially potent when sourced from Hernlak. When removed from the city, Faunids claim that their potency decreases to the standard strength as if it were sourced from any other location. Nonetheless, superstition still remains and some individuals refuse to carry any aid that is not Laklin.
Not only is the magical concentration spread throughout the soil, but it is thick in the air itself. Being one of the few areas where these large trees reside, it was only a matter of time before the residents discovered their ability to imbue their Lifesource X. The Storm collection was founded in Hernlak. Based in means of defense and entertainment, the Storm collection is relatively simple to understand and is the most common form taught.
While not to the extent of Makino, Hernlak is extremely religious. It is considered the location of the foundation of Hernian beliefs. Tellers/priests are typically trained here and then migrate to other locations. Corrupts are extremely taboo here and may be indirectly driven out via avoidance. The close proximity to Ghostgate has created a very specific idea in the mind of Laklins no matter how much "proof" is offered. There is no public space offered to those who are not visually deemed "okay."
Nakir / Local Hermit
ALIVE
Most fauns in Hernlak are used to this local cryptid's odd antics of collecting dead animals for display and honor. Those that aren't will keep a healthy distance due to rumors of Nakir being an ex-corrupt. A process that some don't even believe is possible. Nakir aids those most during Fawning season when it is very easy to lose your new fawn in the forest. He will give vague clues to where your fresh baby will appear with no further aid. He lives on the outskirts of Hernlek to avoid confrontation with both corrupt in Ghosgate and as as Faunids in Hernlak. There isn't anything company can offer him that solitude cannot fulfill.
