The purr-fect companion.
Domesticated long before written record, the common βCatβ is a relative of the wild shadowcat, though any relation is now purely ancestral. Unlike their distant cousins, cats lack the vibrant alopecic displays that define wild shadowcats. These differences are not due to selective breeding, but to divergent evolution - many of the dramatic traits seen in the wild were never present in their shared ancestor.
Cats are one of the most diverse companion species in Atalav, with coloration and patterning as varied as any faunid dialect. While small and unassuming, they remain agile hunters, retaining a playful instinct and a strong sense of territorial loyalty. Their presence is most common in cities and towns, where their companionship is treasured - especially in homes that value warmth, purring, and a little mischief.
β
Cats are among the easiest companions to care for. They bond deeply and choose a single Faun or small family as their clan. While many will self-regulate their diet and territory if allowed outdoors, it is still considered respectful to provide enrichment, soft bedding, and high perches so as to limit possible predation on neighboring companions.
Due to their relatively simple needs, cats are a favored first companion for young fauns. Many believe their subtle mannerisms help teach patience, gentleness, and emotional intuition.
