Leafel

The companion that weasels into your heart.

A rarity to even the most dedicated enthusiast, Leafels are curious and delightful creatures that populate the forests of Veritam. Hidden among the bioluminescent foliage, their soft glow helps them blend into the underbrush when X levels rise at night.

The glow doesn’t come from the Leafel itself, but from what it eats. Specifically, they feast on numerous species of rodents and insects which then feed on plants saturated with Lifesource X. Without a steady diet of Veritam-sourced prey, a Leafel’s glow fades and they return to a dull non-glowing coat.

Because of their elusive nature and ever-changing glow, the true population of Leafels is unknown. Some naturalists insist they’re more myth than mammal. Locals will tell tales of lost travelers guided home by a glowing Leafel.

While difficult to keep as companions, there have been reports of bonded Leafels. They’re feisty, they bite, and they’re picky eaters. But if you’re lucky enough to earn one’s trust, you might just have a friend for life. Just keep track of how many fingers you have, Ouch!

You do not choose to be companions with a leafel. It chooses to be companions with you. If a Leafel stays with you, offer a sheltered place to burrow and forage. Leafels are crepuscular, shy, and sensitive to overexposure. Let it sleep in peace. Let it wake when it wants.

A Leafel glows when its diet includes prey rich in Lifesource X. This is most often from its native diet of Veritam prey. However, feeding a Leafel this diet solely to provoke its glow is considered relatively unethical. The glow is a side effect of wild balance, not a spectacle for entertainment. A Leafel kept in companionship is not expected to shine. Its' dull coat is no less beautiful than the coat of a wild Leafel. Being honored with the presence of this bratty creature in itself is a miracle.
